Sandra Fox—The Jews of Summer: Summer Camp and Jewish Culture in Postwar America (Zoom Only)

- Pacific Time Virtual Program

In partnership with the Stanford University Press Series in Jewish History and Culture

In the post-WWII decades, American Jewish leaders debated how to preserve and produce what they considered authentic Jewish culture, fearful that growing affluence and social comfort threatened the future of Jewish life in America. Leaders across the ideological spectrum pinned their hopes for the Jewish future on residential summer camps for youth, using them to mold children according to their visions of ideal Jewish culture. This sense of cultural crisis birthed a rite of passage for Jewish children, while tensions between adults and youth at camp yielded new forms of Jewishness.
