Rachel Brodie: The Other Women: Non-Jewish Women in the Bible, Midrash, and Contemporary Poetry

In exploring the Bible as literature, the portrayal of women is usually viewed with suspicion because the text is assumed to be relayed through a male point of view. How much more so the Biblical characters who are not only women but also non-Israelites?! Focusing on those who are doubly “other” offers a unique opportunity to explore Biblical values as well as the fears and fantasies that animate the text and our interpretations.
