Ken Blady: Yiddish from Scratch (Virtual on Zoom)

- Pacific Time Virtual Program

In partnership with KlezCalifornia

Learn this rich and colorful language in a relaxed, irreverent and heimishe atmosphere.

Born in the 11th century, Yiddish has been the living tongue of the Ashkenazi Jewish world ever since. For some it is a language their parents or grandparents spoke when they didn't want the kinderlech to understand. For others it is simply a quaint language of the distant past. But Yiddish, one of the most idiomatic of languages, is very much alive today. Join Bay Area Jewish educator and native speaker, Ken Blady, as he takes you on a linguistic journey to the Land of Yiddish. Here is a wonderful opportunity to learn this rich and colorful language in a relaxed, irreverent and heimisheh atmosphere. All you need is a desire to learn, some zits fleisch (butt, i.e., perseverance), an interest in Jewish culture, and an ability tzu veren tseshussen far gelekhter (to crack up)!

Emphasis will be placed on interactive conversation among students (almost) entirely in Yiddish in order to develop the ability to form sentences for basic needs when conversing with Yiddish speakers. The instructor will include salient aspects of Yiddish history and culture as material for conversation.

8 Tuesdays: 1/24, 1/31, 2/7, 2/14, 2/21, 2/28, 3/14 and 3/21 @ 4-5:30pm

Course offered live online. Full video recordings of each lesson will be distributed  to course registrants. (Video links will not appear on this page.)
