Born in the 11th century, Yiddish has been the living tongue of the Ashkenazi Jewish world ever since. For some it is a language their parents or grandparents spoke when they didn’t want the kinderlech to understand. For others it is simply a quaint language of the distant past. But Yiddish, one of the most idiomatic of languages, is very much alive today. Join Bay Area Jewish educator and native speaker, Ken Blady, as he takes you on a linguistic journey to the Land of Yiddish. Here is a wonderful opportunity to learn this rich and colorful language in a relaxed, irreverent and heimisheh atmosphere. All you need is a desire to learn, some zits fleisch (butt, i.e., perseverance), an interest in Jewish culture, and an ability tzu veren tseshussen far gelekhter (to crack up)!
This is a course for those who are serious about lernen Yidish and have mastered some of the more elementary words and phrases. For those who want to converse with bube in zayde (grandma and grandpa) and other Yiddish-speaking mishpukhe (family) and friends; and with ultra-Orthodox Jews in shteytlekh the world over. Emphasis is on conversation. There will be grammar and vocabulary exercises in class.
Material covered in each class will be transcribed and recorded, and available here for all the students weekly. Students will be highly encouraged to form khevrises (groups of study partners) outside the classroom. A variety of shprekhverter (expressions) and vitslekh (witticisms), many rated R, will also be provided.
8 Mondays: 1/23, 1/30, 2/6, 2/13, 2/20, 2/27, 3/13 and 3/20 @ 4-5:30pm
