How did writers trapped behind Nazi ghetto walls use the pen as a weapon of witness? This three-part series examines the urgent, real-time creative responses of Jewish authors in the Warsaw, Łódź, and Vilna ghettos. By exploring recovered manuscripts and clandestine archives—including the famed Oyneg Shabes—we trace how these writers navigated the harrowing paradoxes of justice, agency, and rage. We will uncover how literature, from poetry to satire, became a vital act of spiritual resistance in a world falling into ruin.
The Curriculum
- Session 1 (6/3) · Before, During, and After: An analysis of Oskar Rosenfeld and Shaye Shpigl and their documentation of the Łódź Ghetto.
- Session 2 (6/10) · Sherlock Holmes in Nazi Ghettos: Exploring the subversive use of detective fiction and journals by Gustawa Jarecka and Hermann Kruk in the Warsaw and Vilna Ghettos.
- Session 3 (6/17) · Whither Rage? A study of the powerful poetic and prose responses to catastrophe by Itzhak Katzenelson and Yehoshua Perle (Warsaw Ghetto).
